Jaundice leading to brain damage in infants

While it is relatively common for babies in Arizona to be born with slight jaundice, if the condition is not properly treated, the buildup of bilirubin in the infant's system may lead to permanent brain damage. If your baby suffered from chronic bilirubin encephalopathy that was not promptly addressed, your child may be left with permanent and heartbreaking brain damage as a result.

Chronic bilirubin encephalopathy, also known as Kernicterus, is a severe form of jaundice that occurs in some infants shortly after birth. If recognized and treated appropriately, it will cause no further issues for the affected infant. In the event that it was not, life-altering permanent disability and brain damage may be the unfortunate result.

Kernicterus may also be a side effect of a genetic disorder over which the physician and medical staff have little ability to control. If Kernicterus instead results from a failure to treat jaundice not associated with such a disorder, you may be able to hold the physician, hospital and other obstetric medical staff responsible for your child's injuries through a medical malpractice lawsuit.

At our law firm, our dedicated attorneys provide compassionate and aggressive advocacy for our clients whose children have suffered Kernicterus due to medical malpractice. We understand how devastating such an injury may be for both our clients and their children, and we work hard in order to secure settlements and verdicts that are favorable. With our extensive experience handling these types of matters, we understand that parents often have questions regarding what they can do when their child has suffered permanent brain damage due to a failure to appropriately treat jaundice. In order to provide better assistance, we have gathered information you may find helpful on our firm's birth injury page.
